After his visit with the King of Turfan, Xuanzang was anxious to head West again and the only way to reach Persia was through several ranges of mountains. This song speaks to the travails encountered by Xuanzang and his entourage along the way. He lost one third of his companions who either fell to their deaths or froze to death while crossing the Tian Shan Mountains.
